Angela Gromova, widely known by her nickname “Puma,” is a former professional handball player known for her powerful playing style, physical strength, and leadership on the court. Born on June 6, 1980, in the coastal town of Malyi Mayak on the southern coast of Crimea, Angela developed athletic abilities from an early age.

Growing up near the Black Sea, she was actively involved in swimming, running, and physical conditioning. Her strong upper body, natural coordination, and competitive mindset quickly attracted the attention of local coaches.

At the age of 13, Angela joined her first youth sports program in Alushta, where she began specialized handball training. By age 16, she continued her development in Simferopol, training in youth sports schools and regional training camps.

In 1998, Angela joined the women’s handball club Tavria-Crimea, where she played as a left back / backcourt player. Her explosive shots, aggressive defense, and ability to lead under pressure earned her the nickname “Puma.”

Between 1998 and 2004, she represented her club in regional and national tournaments across Ukraine, including competitions in Simferopol, Alushta, Yevpatoria, Odessa, and Dnipro. She became known for her strong physique, powerful throwing technique, and fearless attitude in contact situations.

Regional Women’s Handball Champion — Crimea, 2000

Best Backcourt Player — Southern Ukraine Tournament, Yevpatoria, 2000

Team Captain — Tavria-Crimea (2002–2004)

Multiple tournament MVP and scoring awards

Angela retired from professional competition after a shoulder injury but remained involved in sport through mentoring and sharing her experience with younger athletes.

Known for her deep voice, strong character, and unique athletic appearance, Angela has often spoken openly about stereotypes surrounding powerful women in sport.
